4 Best Ski Slopes in New Zealand

New Zealand contains some of the best ski slopes in the world and, for the most part, offers very good value for money. It's important to always ensure that your travel insurance policy includes cover for skiing, even if you have to pay a slightly higher premium. After all, the last thing you want is to have your holiday ruined by having to pay for expensive medical treatment is if you have an accident.

There are ski fields all over New Zealand and whilst it is difficult to narrow down your selections to a top four list, the following descriptions will assist you in making your decision.

  • Mt Ruapehu. Probably the most famous ski resort in New Zealand, Mt Ruapehu is natural skiing country with lashings of secret powder stashes and steep chutes that provide challenges for the most experienced skiers. Beginners will also have a fantastic time in this famous resort with a full range of learner's facilities as well as parks for snowboarders and skiers of all abilities. You can stay at the resort itself or settle into one of the nearby towns and commute each day. Places like Ohakune and Whakapapa Village are located at the short distance away and have a huge selection of hotel or motel type accommodation as well as restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes.
  • Broken River. Located just over an hour and a half from Christchurch in the South Island, this resort is great value for money and provides bunk style sleeping arrangements only a short walk away from the lifts. You will need to have your own ski equipment because there are no hire facilities. The slopes themselves offer unprecedented enjoyment in a little-known and uncrowded skiing area. This is certainly well worth considering.
  • Cardrona Alpine Resort. This small resort is located just 33 km from Wanaka and 57 km from Queenstown. Offering magnificent treeless slopes, you will enjoy fairly secluded opportunities to ski at your leisure. The apartments have two bedrooms or alternatively, you could stay in either Queenstown or Wanaka and commute each day.
  • Coronet Peak. Located only a short drive from Queenstown in the South Island, Coronet Peak has fantastic open slopes and the wide open terrain is conducive to all types of skiing. The area has been groomed into a ski field for everyone including moguls, open back bowls and very well groomed long runs. Learners are catered for with a huge area specially designed for them and as far as accommodation goes, you can choose from many hotels and motels right in the resort itself.

These four ski resorts are just the start to the many dozens of ski fields you can choose from in New Zealand. Many people have a preference for staying at the better-known resorts because of the consistency of snowfalls and the established accommodation options. On the other hand, there is a growing breed of skiers who are seeking something out of the ordinary and are prepared to travel to different areas and try out new fields.

The above selection will certainly set your mind thinking about the possibilities. In any case, it is worth while reiterating that you should ensure that your holiday insurance covers skiing so that any unforeseen expenses will be taken care of.
