Eight new polls of the 2012 presidential race have good news for President Barack Obama. The president holds leads between two and nine points in every poll except one, including two polls in Ohio, and two others in the important battleground states of Wisconsin and Florida.
Ohio
Two polls in Ohio show Obama ahead of rival Republican Mitt Romney. In a poll of 847 likely voters conducted between Aug. 16-21 by the University of Cincinnati, the president led by 3 points, 49 to 46. The result is within the poll's 3.4 percent margin of error. A second poll, conducted by CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac, showed Obama with a six- point lead over Romney, 50 to 44 percent. The poll surveyed 1,253 likely voters from Aug. 15-21, with a 3 percent margin of error.
Florida and Wisconsin
The same CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac poll also surveyed likely voters in the battleground states of Florida and Wisconsin. In both states, the president was ahead of his challenger, but not by much. In Florida, Obama was ahead by three points, 49 to 46 percent, while in Wisconsin, the president's lead was only two points, 49 percent to 47 percent. Both results are within the poll's three-point margin of error. The poll surveyed 1,190 likely voters in Wisconsin, and 1,241 likely voters in Florida. Both states are important to both campaigns, particularly Wisconsin, the home state of Romney's proposed running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan.
Missouri
Challenger Mitt Romney only led President Obama in one new poll, in Missouri. Public Policy Polling (PPP) conducted a poll of 500 likely voters on Aug. 20. Romney led Obama 52 percent to 42 percent, well outside the poll's 4.4 percent margin of error. In a press release, PPP speculated that the selection of Paul Ryan to the Republican ticket may be helping Romney in a state that is trending Republican. Ryan was viewed favorably by 48 percent of those surveyed, compared to 40 percent unfavorable. His favorability numbers are better than Romney, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden's.
Connecticut
A new Rasmussen poll of 500 likely Connecticut voters found Obama with an eight-point lead in the race, 51 to 43 percent. The poll, conducted on Aug. 21, had a 4.5-percent margin of error. Connecticut was traditionally a Republican stronghold in presidential elections, but that has changed in the last two decades. According to election data aggregated by 270ToWin.com, Connecticut has voted for the Democratic candidate for president in every election since 1992.
Pennsylvania and Michigan
President Obama leads Mitt Romney in both of these Rust Belt states. In Pennsylvania, a new conducted by Morning Call/Muhlenburg found Obama ahead of Romney by nine points, 49 percent to 40 percent. This was the first poll of Pennsylvania since the announcement of Ryan as the Republican vice presidential pick, and Obama remains in the lead. The poll of 422 likely voters had a margin of error of 5 percent.
In Michigan, Obama is ahead of Romney 47.5 percent to 42 percent. The poll, conducted by Detroit News, surveyed 600 likely voters from Aug. 18-20, with a margin of error of 4 percent. Obama has been polling consistently in front of Romney in Michigan since the spring, despite Michigan being the Republican nominee's home state.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Exploding stars called Type 1a supernova are ideal for measuring cosmic distance because they are bright enough to spot across the Universe and have relatively the same luminosity everywhere. Although astronomers have many theories about the kinds of star systems involved in these explosions (or progenitor systems), no one has ever directly observed one -- until now.
In the August 24 issue of Science, the multi-institutional Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) team presents the first-ever direct observations of a Type 1a supernova progenitor system. Astronomers have collected evidence indicating that the progenitor system of a Type 1a supernova, called PTF 11kx, contains a red giant star. They also show that the system previously underwent at least one much smaller nova eruption before it ended its life in a destructive supernova. The system is located 600 million light years away in the constellation Lynx.
By comparison, indirect observations of another Type 1a supernova progenitor system (called SN 2011fe, conducted by the PTF team last year) showed no evidence of a red giant star. Taken together, these observations unequivocally show that just because Type 1a supernovae look the same, that doesn't mean they are all born the same way.
"We know that Type 1a supernovae vary slightly from galaxy to galaxy, and we've been calibrating for that, but this PTF 11kx observation is providing the first explanation of why this happens," says Peter Nugent, a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and a co-author on the paper. "This discovery gives us an opportunity to refine and improve the accuracy of our cosmic measurements."
"It's a total surprise to find that thermonuclear supernovae, which all seem so similar, come from different kinds of stars," says Andy Howell, a staff scientist at the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) and a co-author on the paper. "How could these events look so similar, if they had different origins?"
A One in a Thousand Discovery, Powered by Supercomputers
Although Type 1a supernovae are rare, occurring maybe once or twice a century in a typical galaxy, Nugent notes that finding a Type 1a progenitor system like PTF 11kx is even more rare. "You maybe find one of these systems in a sample of 1,000 Type 1a supernovae," he says. "The Palomar Transient Factory Real-Time Detection Pipeline was crucial to finding PTF 11kx."
The PTF survey uses a robotic telescope mounted on the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory in southern California to scan the sky nightly. As the observations are taken, the data travels more than 400 miles via high-speed networks-including the National Science Foundation's High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network and the Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet)-to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), located at Berkeley Lab. There, the Real-time Transient Detection Pipeline uses supercomputers, a high-speed parallel filesystem and sophisticated machine learning algorithms to sift the data and identify events for scientists to follow up on.
According to Nugent, the pipeline detected the supernova on January 16, 2011. He and UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher Jeffrey Silverman immediately followed up on the event with spectroscopy observations from the Shane telescope at the University of California's Lick Observatory. These observations revealed incredibly strong calcium signals in the gas and dust surrounding the supernova, which is extremely unusual.
The signals were so peculiar that Nugent and his UC Berkeley colleagues, Alex Filippenko and Joshua Bloom, triggered a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation using the Keck Telescope in Hawaii. "We basically called up a fellow UC observer and interrupted their observations in order to get time critical spectra," Nugent explains.
From the Keck observations, astronomers noticed that the clouds of gas and dust surrounding PTF 11kx were moving too slowly to be coming from the recent supernova, but moving too quickly to be stellar wind. They suspected that maybe the star erupted, or went nova, previously propelling a shell of material outwards. The material, they surmised, must be slowing down as it collided with wind from a nearby red giant star. But for this theory to be true, the material from the recent supernova should eventually catch up and collide with gas and dust from the previous nova. That's exactly what the PTF team eventually observed.
In the months following the supernova, the PTF team watched the calcium signal drop and eventually vanish. Then, 58 days after the supernova went off, Berkeley Lab Scientist Nao Suzuki who was observing the system with the Lick telescope noticed a sudden, strong burst in calcium coming from the system, indicating that the new supernova material had finally collided with the old material.
"This was the most exciting supernova I've ever studied. For several months, almost every new observation showed something we'd never seen before," says Ben Dilday, a UC Santa Barbra postdoctoral researchers and lead author of the study.
A New Kind of Type 1a Supernova
According to Dilday, it is not unusual for a star to undergo nova eruptions more than once. In fact, a "recurrent nova" system called RS Ophiuchi exists within our own Milky Way Galaxy. Located about 5,000 light years away, the system is close enough that astronomers can tell that it consists of a compact white dwarf star (the corpse of a sun-like star) orbiting a red giant. Material being blown off the red giant star in a stellar wind lands on the white dwarf. As the material builds up, the white dwarf periodically explodes, or novas, in this case, about every 20 years.
Astronomers predict that in recurring novas, the white dwarf loses more mass in the nova eruption than it gains from the red giant. Because Type 1a supernovae occur in systems where a white dwarf accretes mass from a nearby star until it can't grow any further and explodes, many scientists concluded that recurrent nova systems could not produce Type 1a supernovae. They thought the white dwarf would lose too much mass to ever become a supernova. PTF 11kx is the first observational evidence that Type 1a supernovae can occur in these systems.
"Because we've looked at thousands of systems and PTF 11kx is the only one that we've found that looks exactly like this, we think it is probably a rare phenomenon. However, these systems could be somewhat more common, and nature is just hiding their signatures from us," says Silverman.
The Palomar Transient Factory's Real-Time detection pipeline is made possible with support from the DOE Office of Science, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army and Marine Corps on Wednesday awarded Humvee maker AM General as well as Lockheed Martin Corp
The multibillion-dollar Humvee-replacement program is one of few new development programs available to U.S. companies as the Pentagon prepares for up to $1 trillion in cuts to planned spending over the next decade.
Lockheed, privately held AM General and Oshkosh beat out Navistar International Corp
The decision by the two military services, posted late Wednesday on a government contracting site, foresees initial funding of $99.5 million on the program, with the remaining funds to be spent in fiscal years 2013 and 2014. The Army issued a request for proposals on January 26 for the program.
AM General, which had previously been teamed with General Dynamics, and Oshkosh had entered the competition only in March, along with Navistar, which was initially part of a team with BAE Systems.
AM General's overall contract was valued at $64.5 million; Lockheed's was valued at $66.3 million and Oshkosh -- which also built a mine-resistant, all-terrain vehicle for the military's use in Afghanistan, was valued at $56.4 million.
Current plans call for the Army to buy up to 50,000 of the new vehicles, with the Marines set to buy 5,000 more.
AM General welcomed the announcement, saying it would produce 22 prototypes of its "Blast Resistant Vehicle - Off road" or BRV-O, which it said was based on over a decade of the company's investment in research, development and testing.
Navistar said it was disappointed by the news, but said there could be an opportunity to compete for a production contract once the engineering and manufacturing development phase was completed. A spokeswoman said she was not aware of any plans by the company to protest the government's decision.
No immediate comment was available from the other companies.
The Army's announcement on Wednesday said the losing bidders could proceed to develop vehicles at their own cost and risk, but needed to let the government know of any such plans within 30 days.

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Prince Harry has been caught on camera doing something embarrassing ? again.
Celebrity gossip website TMZ on Tuesday posted photos of the 27-year-old royal cavorting nude with an unidentified woman in a VIP suite in Las Vegas. It's hardly the first time the prince ? who allegedly disrobed as part of a game of strip pool ? has been filmed in a compromising situation. The third-in-line to the throne was famously photographed wearing a Nazi uniform for a costume party, and in another photo-gaffe he was seen cupping the breast of a female TV presenter. Some would argue footage in which he was heard to utter a racial slur while teasing a fellow army cadet from Pakistan was more serious.
If the reaction of Britons to Harry's Las Vegas adventure was anything to go by, the nude photos will do little to tarnish his generally positive, party-prince image. The Associated Press asked an assortment of royal watchers and British subjects about what they thought about the prince's naked romp.
DID HARRY DO ANYTHING WRONG?
Jim Conlon, a 60-year-old construction worker: "The answer to that is categorically NO." Conlon, who was unloading bags of material from a car, seemed genuinely offended by the very question. "I'd be proud of him if he were my son," he said.
Conlon's opinion was typical of a country where thousands of streets and pubs are named for the royal family. Polls published earlier this year showed support for the monarchy at an all-time high, perhaps buoyed by the celebrations surrounding Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations marking her 60 years on the throne.
Interviews with Londoners up and down the capital's Prince of Wales Road yielded few critics of Harry's antics.
Craig Martin, 38, another construction worker: "He's the prince. He can have any bird he wants!"
Down the road, caregiver Shirley Ashard laughed at the news of Harry's naked adventure, dismissing questions about the propriety of running around a plush hotel room in the buff with a boys-will-be-boys shrug.
"I've got kids. They do things like that," the 59-year-old said. "He's a lad, for God's sake."
WILL HARRY'S ROMP HARM THE IMAGE OF THE PRINCE, OR THE ROYAL FAMILY?
Hanad Darwish, a 19-year-old student from Birmingham, worried about what Harry's hijinks said about his judgment.
"It is a little immature and gives the royals a bad image," he said.
But Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said it wasn't likely that Harry's reputation would suffer. Seward said his party-boy image was part of his approachable, normal persona.
"Of course it's stupid, but it doesn't make people dislike him ? quite the opposite," she said.
"It shows that he is a guy who gets into trouble and he's the one people love to love. It could only happen to Harry ? but we love him for it."
She did think, though, that Harry might get a talking-to from Prince Charles. "I would think his father would speak to him," she said.
DOESN'T THE ROYAL FAMILY HAVE A HISTORY OF BAD-BOY BEHAVIOR?
Yes, said Anne Sebba, biographer of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee whose affair with King Edward VIII ? Harry's great-great-uncle ? led to his abdication in 1936.
That king's grandfather, Edward VII ? who reigned from 1901 to 1910 ? had many affairs, parking his carriage outside the houses of his mistresses while he visited.
"The staff would be very discreet," said Sebba. "People knew; they just didn't talk about it."
Edward VIII and Simpson were well known in upper-crust circles for their hedonistic parties ? and some visitors wrote their shocked reactions in diaries.
"It didn't reach the papers," Sebba said. "It is just in the private diaries. Nobody was taking photographs. Nobody was posting it on the Internet.
"The old system depended on incredible discretion, loyalty and deference ? and all that has gone. The royal family has had to make themselves so open and available and this is the downside of the coin."
Prince Harry's office confirmed Wednesday that the photos were of the prince but declined to make any further comment.
WHAT ABOUT THE PRINCE'S PRIVACY?
The blurry, low-resolution photographs appear to have been snapped from inside a hotel suite, and it isn't clear that the prince was aware that they were being taken.
That could be a violation of the royal's privacy. It might also explain why Britain's scandal-hungry tabloids ? normally avid consumers of titillating photos ? were steering clear of the images.
Ashard, the caregiver, said the only outrage she could muster was against the photographer.
"That's out of order," she said. "How would you like it if someone took pictures of you in your hotel room?"
ISN'T SOMEONE SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING HIM?
Royal protection officers watch over the queen and her family 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ? though they remain firmly on the outside of the bedroom door. So shouldn't someone have been around to make sure this didn't happen? Dai Davies, a former head of royal protection, said it did seem as if someone had let their guard down.
He noted that the past few decades were replete with examples of journalists trying to catch royals in compromising positions.
"There has to be a degree of responsibility and caution," he said. "Surely we have to learn from history. The press love this."

Our only complaints are that said camera uses a resistive touchscreen, and the lack of white balance options is also quite bizarre -- $179 isn't exactly a cheap enough price to justify this flaw. >> well, he's done. is he done voluntarily because he gets out or is he going to done at hand of the electorate in missouri on november 6th ? the stakes for the gop , though, as you made reference to a moment ago, the platform. that platform has been a pro-life platform with no exceptions for rape or incest for the last several conventions but it hasn't percolated to the surface. this could be different because everybody's about to descend on tampa , media will be there looking for a story, and it puts mitt romney and paul ryan in a very awkward position, if the party adopts a platform that is at odds with what they're saying on that issue and it becomes an embarrassment. last thought is this, every day we're talking about social issues, is a bad day for the romney / ryan ticket a good day for the president, i say.
>> maybe this is a good day for women , maybe it's not the economy, but certainly something important to women and honestly, should be to menace well. shawna, as michael noted, the language that the gop platform could perhaps include, is the same language from 2004 , 2008 , which would oppose abortions in all circumstances, rape and incest. mitt romney would be the latest candidate following john mccain and george w. bush who stand against this language or at least who don't agree with it. let me play what wrnc chairman said, the nominee with the platform language from the gop .
>> i think, as far as like these, you know, the details of some of these things, like an exception for rape or life of the mother, these are not uncommon differences that candidates have and don't share some of the detail on those exceptions. but as far as our platform is concerned, think is the platform of the republican party . it's not the platform of mitt romney .
>> let me get your thoughts on that, it's not the platform for mitt romney , it wasn't for john mccain , it's not for george w. bush but it is for people in the republican party .
>> yeah, it's right. he's coming right out and saying it. he's saying it is the platform of the republican party to blame rape victims for their own rape and own pregnancy and force women to take the rainist's children to term. that's a long standing tenet of the republican party . it's something that paul ryan believes in strongly. who is obviously on the presidential ticket as well. and romney 's on record saying they're on the same page on almost every issue that would come up through the course of the campaign. i don't think it's a stretch to say that even though what paul akin said was beyond the pale as far as what romney or other, you know, establishment republicans think that a national political figure should be saying out loud, but it reflects what the political party does believe from a policy perspective.
>> chip, let me bring you back in, so many have tied congressman ryan into this. joe scarborough took great issue, pointing out that ryan 's never used the language that akin used in the interview on sunday with the notion of rape, but he did use this forcible rape language in legislation that they co-sponsored. john heilemann, i think, had interestingen sight.
>> they co-sponsored legislation that tried to redefine rape and something called forcible rape . that was the wildest controversial it wasn't because it tried to outlaw abortions in all cases of rape and incest, they tried to carve out and make a distinction between some other form of rape and something that they called forcible rape . you know, for most women , rape is rape.
>> so, chip, does that stick on congressman ryan ? no, he never said legitimate rape but the notion of forceable rape versus some other category, heilemann said it, you feel this kay w way the president said it rape is rape.

>> well, it's probably a tactic by democrats, but a fair tactic if there's guilt by association in this regard. he hasn't mirrored the words of the outrageous statement by congressman akin, but on the issue that you've identified, there are similarities and they have to live with that. one observation when mike huckabee 's on the radioing talking about extraordinary people who have been born by virtue of a rape, that also tells you that the far right of the republican party is not going to wave the white flag on this exception being carved out for rape or incest. that's an issue that's going to live for the next couple of days going into tampa . that's not a good thing for the gop .
>> your point, michael you have pat robertson , tony perkens, conservative leaders sticking with akin and now, in fact, tony perkins , we'll talk about late, has set his sights on senator scott brown , one of the first big name republicans to come out against akin. shaunna, i want to play governor romney 's late est assertion.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? While they understand the public's concern over what might be perceived as an apparent hazing incident involving Prince Amukamara, several New York Giants insist that throwing the second-year cornerback into a tub of ice water was a football tradition and not bullying.
Amukamara and Jason Pierre-Paul, the Pro Bowl defensive end who threw him into the metal ice tub, maintained Monday that they are friends and there was nothing personal involved.
Neither would say what triggered the incident.
Most players on the Super Bowl champions (No. 3 in the AP Pro32) seemed more concerned that punter Steve Weatherford actually posted the video, and that it might give youngsters the idea that bullying and hazing are OK.
"First of all, absolutely none of us condone bullying," defensive captain Justin Tuck said. "We've heard that. So just go ahead and put it out there. None of us condone bullying. And you don't want to put anybody in a situation where they can get hurt. With that said, we just got to do a better job of being conscious of how that looks and how people can perceive it."
Weatherford posted the obscenity-laced video of the recent training camp incident on Saturday night. He took it down Sunday and apologized Monday to teammates and fans.
The video shows Pierre-Paul carrying Amukamara over his shoulder in the Giants' locker room at the University at Albany and seemingly slamming him into a tub of ice water. Amukamara gets out quickly, but the look on his face seems to indicate he is upset.
Amukamara acknowledged he was lucky that he wasn't hurt, but he was adamant that he was not the victim of hazing. He said Pierre-Paul did not owe him an apology
"I definitely think it is has (created) a lot of distractions to our team and doesn't give the professional football league, the NFL, a good look," said Amukamara, who said other players were thrown in the tub at training camp. "Coming into the NFL, we are taught to protect the shield, and I definitely don't think that it is doing that. It is definitely a situation that we are not trying to brush under the rug. We are trying to address it, and it was just a lot of horseplay that was taken too far."
While he denied being embarrassed by the videotape, Pierre-Paul indicated his days of throwing players into tubs might be over.
"I feel like me and Prince, we're cool," said the 23-year-old Pierre-Paul, who had a career-best 16? sacks last season. "All the guys around here are cool. We are all like family to each other. It is something that we were having fun and games and the media took out of proportion."
Pierre-Paul said he didn't think Weatherford meant any harm by making and posting the video.
"I think he meant it to be funny," Pierre-Paul said. "For us guys, it was funny, but to the media and all the fans, they didn't find it funny. I apologize to my fans. It was just a joke that gone bad."
Coach Tom Coughlin spoke to the team about social media Monday, with the message that what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room, several players said.
Pierre-Paul said Coughlin wasn't happy with the dunking, since there was potential for injury.
"Like I said, I am not trying to harm Prince or any one of my teammates," Pierre-Paul said. "We need him and need them all."
Still, it sounded as though this would not be the end of the incidents.
"It's football ? guys are going to have fun and we have fun and only football players understand," Pierre-Paul said.
Tuck said he paid his dues as a young player, getting dunked, buying breakfast for veterans and even picking up their laundry. He conceded it is a form of hazing, but says it's benign and not meant to inflict injury and make someone feel inferior.
"We definitely don't want to be seen in the light of bullies or guys that are taking advantage of younger guys or situations or anything like that," Tuck said. "It's unfortunate that it was perceived that way. We definitely do not want to be perceived that way. We're not that way at all. We've just got to do our part to make sure that we do better."
Weatherford seemed to take the fallout from the videotape the hardest. He was near tears talking about it.
"It's just disappointing because I pride myself on being a good example. Obviously that was a lapse in judgment," he said. "Everyone in this locker room loves each other; we all get along great. It was simply horsing around. It wasn't perceived that way ? I apologize for that. So it was a mistake on my part."

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A car belonging to an Egyptian diplomat was blown up near his home in the eastern Libyan city Benghazi on Monday, a day after deadly bomb attacks in the capital Tripoli blamed on supporters of deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi.
A homemade device exploded under the vehicle of the Egyptian consulate's first secretary Abdelhamid Rifai in one of the city's most affluent neighborhoods but no one was hurt, security sources told Reuters.
Both Sunday and Monday's attacks took place days ahead of the first anniversary of the capture of Tripoli by rebels during last year's revolution.
The violence will test the mettle of a national assembly that made improving security a priority when it assumed control of the country earlier this month.
Three car bombs exploded near interior ministry and security buildings in the Libyan capital on Sunday, killing two people and wounding three others.
They were the first fatal attacks of their kind since Gaddafi's overthrow and death last year after 42 years in power.
Libyan security officials said on Sunday they had arrested 32 members of an organized network of Gaddafi loyalists linked to the attacks.
Libya has been hit by persistent instability since the overthrow of Gaddafi. Authorities are still trying to disarm numerous groups, mostly militias who took part in the uprising, who refuse to lay down their weapons.
The International Committee of the Red Cross suspended its activities in Benghazi, Libya's second biggest city, and Misrata after one of its compounds in Misrata was attacked with grenades and rockets.
The fate of seven Iranian relief workers, official guests of the Libyan Red Crescent Association, remains unknown almost three weeks after they were kidnapped by gunmen in the heart of Benghazi.

Unsettled weather conditions will continue across the South and portions of the Mid-Atlantic on Monday as a slow moving cold front and waves of low pressure gradually push offshore. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean combined with energy from this disturbance will fuel another round of scattered to numerous showers with periods of locally heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in areas near the Gulf Coast and scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic. Heavy rainfall near the central Gulf Coast may translate into possible flooding during the day. By Monday night, this disturbance is expected to push into the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
To the north, a cold front will drop across the Northeast and Lower Great Lakes with generally isolated showers. Cooler temperatures will follow behind the cold front as high pressure builds in with a drier and cooler airmass.
For the West, monsoon moisture and subtropical disturbances will maintain areas of showers and thunderstorms in the Southwest and Central Great Basin. This activity will spread into the Northern Intermountain West and the Central and Northern Rockies as a trough of low pressure approaches the Pacific Northwest with frontal disturbances. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 32 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 102 degrees at Needles, Calif.

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Miners must return to work Monday or face being fired from the platinum mine where rivalry between unions exploded into violence that led to the deaths of 44 people in a week, Lonmin PLC said Sunday. Thirty-four strikers were gunned down by police in one of the worst displays of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994.
President Jacob Zuma declared a week of national mourning starting Monday to commemorate the lives of all South Africans who have died violently, especially the 44 at Marikana mine.
"The nation is in shock and pain," Zuma said in a statement. "We must this week reflect on the sanctity of human life ... We must avoid finger-pointing and recrimination. We must unite against violence from whatever quarter."
Some 3,000 rock-drill operators called RDOs have been leading an illegal strike among the mine's 25,000-strong labor force plus 10,000 contractors. Intimidation and threats of violence kept many more away.
"The safety and security of our employees is paramount and nobody will be asked to report for duty if the police consider them in danger of reprisals," CFO Simon Scott said in a statement.
Lonmin had initially ordered miners to return to work by Friday, then, after the shootings, changed the deadline to Monday, spokeswoman Sue Vey said.
"The final ultimatum provides RDOs with a last opportunity to return to work or face possible dismissal," the company said in a statement Sunday. "Employees could therefore be dismissed if they fail to heed the final ultimatum."
Strikers said they were not sure what to do. The company has not responded to their demands for the minimum wage to be increased from R5,500 ($688) to R12,500 ($1,560).
Last year after a similar dispute over labor representation stopped work at its nearby Karee mine, Lonmin fired all 9,000 workers. Then it asked them to reapply for their jobs and most were rehired.
"Because we work as a majority, if the majority goes back to work tomorrow I'm going too," said miner Vuyisile Mchiza.
But "If the majority is not going back to work tomorrow, I'm not going either because I won't be able to go to work while others are sitting grieving."
Another vowed not to go to work Monday, telling the South African Press Association that, "Expecting us to go back to work is like an insult ? many of our friends and colleagues are dead." He was not identified by name for fear of recriminations.
Jeff Mathunjwa, head of the union to which the strikers belong, said he was not talking to journalists until Tuesday, when asked how he was advising his members.
More than 100 people, miners, their families and local community members, processed past the mine Sunday singing hymns as they made their way to the dusty veld where police officers fired a barrage of shots from automatic rifles and pistols at a group of charging miners on Thursday.
A memorial was led by Pastor Sakhumzi Qiqimana of Marikana New Creation Ministry, who told those gathered: "Now we have no power to come in the middle of the negotiations of the company and the workers, but we are here now to pray and say 'God forgive us,' and now we are here to say 'This (killing) must stop.'"
Police say one of the charging miners shot at them first with a pistol and that they acted in self-defense. Earlier in the week, the strikers had butchered two captured police officers with machetes.
Lonmin said Saturday that it will pay for the educations of all children of mine employees killed in the unrest, up to university level.
A presidential statement Sunday said Zuma would announce the composition of a judicial commission of inquiry into the killings and its terms of reference within a few days. It said he had appointed 10 Cabinet ministers and a provincial premier to visit Marikana on Monday to lead support for bereaved families including the identification of bodies, burials and counseling.
Many people have said they do not know whether missing husbands and sons are among the dead, among 78 wounded, or among more than 250 arrested on charges ranging from public violence to murder.
Zuma urged South Africans to "reaffirm our belief in peace, stability and order and in building a caring society free of crime and violence."
The shootings have South Africans debating their country's magnified levels of violence, and the frequency with which they resort to violence to resolve disputes. South Africa has one of the highest murder and rape rates in the world.
