Cell Phones in School: Tools or Toys? - Education

A few years ago schools gave up the battle against cell phones in school.

Now, students with heads bowed and thumb hopping text madly as they shuffle between classes and relax at the lunch table. But now when they're in class, phones better be out of sight and off (or at least on vibrate) there will be no cell phones are allowed in the classroom.

"We used to say we banned them and students couldn't have them. But the reality is, everybody has them," said a faculty of school. According to a Pew Research survey released on August 19 2008, 71 % of American student?s from ages 12-17 own a cell phone.

The cell phone is seen as a critical tool for our daily lives increasingly, day by day but it should be used in a disciplined manner. Children carrying their phones to school without any use of it doesn?t speak very much.

The parent of a kindergartner student predicts it won't be too long before his son is carrying one to school. Parents and kids need cell phones for communication but not during class when teaching is going on. While older students use it as their clock, camera, planner, entertainment system, news source and encyclopedia, the younger ones help reach out to their parents if they are stranded somewhere. The phone is only a tiny component of this high-tech palm-sized computer for the kids to make out full source of entertainment from it.

Schools have begun asking whether cell phones should be used in schools or not because cell phones are sometime considered tools while others consider them to be toys.

Cell phones or any other wireless technology have often been seized from students while writing exams, but it has also been a source of knowledge sharing and social networking.? Most of the schools are banning or limiting the use of cell phone among students.

However, despite the school policies, in reality more than two-thirds of teens admit to the usage of cell phones in school when they shouldn't.

Many families rely on cell phones as because their kids are living away from their homes. The family uses a cell phone to follow up on their kids, leave a text message reminder about an after-school doctor's appointment or handle emergencies. Although most parents only intend to leave a message when they call during the school day, many kids forget to turn their phones off or can't resist the urge to check who's calling when the phone starts vibrating in their pocket.

"We never allow a student to have a phone turned on or used in the building - ever," said Mrs. Sharma Principal Little Toes. "They can bring them to school, turn them off and put them in the locker during the day. They can use them before school in the morning on the porch and after school when they need to contact someone urgently."

The use of cell phones can rusticate a student and if confiscated can involve a heavy penalty. If children waste their time in unwanted activities like talking for hours on the phone, the school authorities have the right to confiscate the phone and punish the child.
