Ohaneze Okays Single Six-Year Tenure For President, Governors

ABUJA, June 28, (THEWILL) ? Pro-Igbo socio-political group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, on Thursday urged the National Assembly to amend the constitution in favour of a single six-year term for the president and governors, in order to curtail the negative use of incumbency powers during elections.

The group, in addition, called for true federalism, rotation of crucial public offices among the country?s six geopolitical regions and more allocation of funds to states.

President-General of the group, Mr. Ralph Uweche, leading a delegation of Ohaneze to submit their memorandum to the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and chairman of the House Committee on the Constitution Review, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha at the National Assembly, made the requests.

?The revenue allocation formula should be amended to allow 30 per cent of resources generated to go to states, while 70 percent should be remitted to the federal government,? he said, also emphasising the need to rotate strategic offices among the zones of the country, as it would ensure fairness and equity.

He said the recommendations, if adopted in the amended constitution, would strengthen the country's unity in diversity and enthrone true federalism.

Receiving the delegation, Ihedioha assured that the House would take its submissions seriously as the process of the review progresses. He said that, as representatives of the people, the House would only do the bidding of the electorate who put them in office in the first place.

?We will amend the constitution according to the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians,? he said, adding that 14 bills on constitution amendment have so far been referred to the committee while about 100 memoranda have been received from members of the public. He said the committee, in conjunction with its Senate counterpart, was working towards producing a new constitution for the country by April 2013.

Waiters selected 4th by Cavaliers in NBA draft, Melo goes to Celtics

NBA Commissioner David Stern, left, poses with the No. 4 overall draft pick Dion Waiters, of Syracuse, who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA basketball draft, Thursday, June, 28, 2012, in Newark, N.J. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Former Syracuse University basketball player Dion Waiters and Fab Melo were selected in the first round of the NBA Draft Thursday.

Waiters went 4th overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers while Melo was taken 22nd by the Boston Celtics.

Waiters didn't start a single game last season for the Orange, averaging 12.6 points in 37 games. But at 6-foot-4, and a stocky 221 pounds, he's not afraid to drive to the basket and many feel he's already got a pro-ready game. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has compared Waiters' playing style to that of a young Dwyane Wade.

Waiters was named the Big East's best sixth man last year

He was a bit of a mystery man leading up to the draft because he didn't work out for the Cavs or any other team. After he was promised by a lottery team that they would take him, Waiter, on the advice of his management team, packed up and left the league's combine in Chicago before he was measured or participated in a drill.

A talented defender and shot blocker, Melo was the second big man chosen by Boston. They also had the 21st pick, which they used to take Ohio State forward Jared Sullinger. Boston's second-round pick is the 51st overall.

Melo led Syracuse with 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game while averaging 7.8 points per game last season but missed the NCAA tournament because of academic issues. Syracuse was eliminated in the Elite Eight by Ohio State, 77-70.

The 7-0, 255-pound Melo played sparingly as a freshman but was named Big East defensive player of the year as a sophomore when he set a school record with 10 blocks against Seton Hall.

No one-and-done for Kentucky's kids in the NBA draft. The Wildcats instead became the first school to go 1-2.

After the New Orleans Hornets selected Kentucky forward Anthony Davis with the No. 1 pick Thursday, Charlotte followed by taking fellow freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Continued...

The Wildcats are the first school to have the top two picks, part of what they hoped would be perhaps five or even six players selected in the first round. John Calipari has been criticized for recruiting "one-and-done" players ? they stay the required one year and leave ? but he looked thrilled hugging his two stars.

"It's crazy," Davis said. "Michael is a great player. We have two down and four more to go. Hopefully all of them will go in the first round."

It's been a long time since a school made such an impact on the draft.

UCLA had the Nos. 1 and 3 picks in 1969, when Milwaukee took Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ? then Lew Alcindor ? and Lucius Allen went third to the Seattle SuperSonics.

Davis will begin his pro career in the same city where he ended it with a national title. College basketball's player of the year as a freshman was the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four despite shooting just 1 for 10 from the field in the championship game, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking six shots in the victory over Kansas.

Davis slipped on a blue and purple Hornets hat above a conservative gray suit that took no attention away from basketball's most famous eyebrow. Davis even attempted to capitalize on the attention his unibrow gets, trademarking "Fear The Brow" and "Raise The Brow" earlier this month.

On the floor, Davis has the agility of a guard ? and he was one only a few years ago.

The 6-foot-10 Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.7 blocks, becoming a dominant defender after growing 7 inches from the start of his junior year of high school.

A season after the Hornets traded longtime star Chris Paul, Davis is ready to be their centerpiece, since playing for the Wildcats means he's already accustomed to plenty of attention.

"Like I said, at Kentucky we had it all the time, especially the six who played, we had the spotlight all the time," Davis said. "I think it really prepared me." Continued...

Charlotte, coming off a 7-59 season and the worst winning percentage in NBA history, had been open to moving the No. 2 pick if it found the right deal. Instead, Michael Jordan's team went with Kidd-Gilchrist, whose selection by the Bobcats was loudly cheered, a sharp contrast from the boos Commissioner David Stern received when coming out to announce the picks.

The new Charlotte swingman played in high school at nearby St. Patrick's in Elizabeth, N.J., and fans chanted "MKG! MKG!" as he walked off the stage. Though he and Davis talked before the draft, they didn't discuss the history the Wildcats were about to make.

"No. I was shocked at first," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "I was shocked. But no, we didn't. We didn't at all."

Florida's Bradley Beal went third to Washington, making it three SEC freshman in the first three picks.

Thomas Robinson of Kansas, who hoped to go second, fell to Sacramento at No. 5. Portland took Weber State's Damian Lillard at No 6 with its first of two lottery picks, and North Carolina's Harrison Barnes was taken seventh by Golden State.

After Washington's Terrence Ross went to Toronto and Connecticut's Andre Drummond to Detroit, the Hornets rounded out the top 10 by taking Duke guard Austin Rivers with a pick they acquired in the Paul trade. Rivers hugged his father, Boston coach Doc Rivers, who came to be with his family instead of with the Celtics, who owned two later first-round picks.

Davis was the only clear-cut pick entering the draft, and there were some early surprises. Players such as Waiters and Ross went higher than expected, while Robinson dropped to the Kings.

"I really didn't know where I was going to end up at, but it is a bit of a surprise," he said, tearing up when talking about his difficult journey that included the deaths of multiple family members in college. "I didn't work out for Sacramento at all, I probably talked to them about once. But I'm here, so I'm meant to be here."

Houston took Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut at No. 12 with its first of three top-20 picks. But the Rockets, who also had the Nos. 16 and 18 picks, were hoping not to use all of them, instead packaging them for an established player after their pursuit of the Lakers' Pau Gasol fell through last year.

Foreign Policy: Three Routes For Mexico

Mexicans will go on Sunday to vote, in some areas under a virtual state of war and escorted by masked military men in full daylight.

Malcolm Beith is a freelance journalist and the author of two books on the Mexican drug war, The Last Narco and Hasta El ?ltimo D?a.

You can learn a lot about the state of Mexico today by looking at three roads. Paseo de la Reforma is a major urban thoroughfare in Mexico City, lined with banks, hotels, and shopping malls. Highway 101 in Tamaulipas is a modern four-lane highway, once a major artery for Mexicans returning home and tourists heading to Mexico City; now, it is littered with bodies. A series of seemingly arbitrary massacres has turned it into a no-go zone. The third road is a highway under construction in the mountains of the northwestern state of Sinaloa, which will spur trade and provide opportunities for the people of the sierra. But it will also offer the region's powerful drug traffickers ? among them Joaqu?n "El Chapo" Guzm?n Loera, Mexico's most wanted man ? direct access to the U.S.-Mexico border. Which road Mexico takes is the big question.

More than 50,000 people have died in Mexico's drug war since December 2006 ? roughly 12,000 in the last year alone, according to media tallies. Last year, more people were killed in the cartel-ridden border town of Ciudad Ju?rez than civilians in Afghanistan. And there's no reason to believe the July 1 presidential election will turn the tide, as all three leading candidates have pledged to continue the fight against organized crime in spite of the bloodshed. Yet talk of Mexico as a failed state, which reached a peak in 2009, has been replaced by buzz about the country's impressive economic growth. Mexico is on track to grow more than 4.5 percent in 2012, its fastest growth rate in a decade. How can both of these things be true?

Although the headlines have been dominated by the drug-war dead, the beheadings and massacres, the innocent children caught in the crossfire, President Felipe Calder?n ? whose approval rating remains above 50 percent ? has quietly been pushing much-needed reforms: State workers' pension systems have been overhauled; efforts have even been made to open the oil industry to private investment; and the country's growing middle class continues to make strides upward, with GDP per capita up 40 percent since 1988. Calder?n can't run for reelection due to term limits, but the good economic news should give his struggling National Action Party, or PAN, a boost. According to a survey released by the Pew Hispanic Center in April, the net immigration flow from Mexico to the United States has stopped, and may have reversed, due in part to Mexico's improved economic performance relative to its northern neighbor. In some ways, the country appears to be on the right track.

Twelve years ago, the country celebrated its birth as a fully democratic country when the first free and fair elections resulted in the ouster of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which had ruled for 71 years. Multinationals flocked to the country: The Bank of New York Mellon, Credit Suisse, and Banque Toronto-Dominion all now have branches on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. Today, Carlos Slim, a Mexican of Lebanese origin, is the owner of the communications giant Telmex and is the world's richest man. And the country's growing prosperity has continued even as the drug violence has worsened. Foreign direct investment, for instance, grew to $19.4 billion last year. More than 700,000 new jobs were created in 2010, the fastest growth in Mexico in 14 years; the number fell just short of that in 2011. The middle class continues to grow and the Mexican financial system weathered the economic crisis well, according to a March IMF report. (The IMF also praised Mexico's banks for being "profitable and well capitalized.")

Yet, in many respects, much in Mexico appears to have remained unchanged. Corruption is still rampant: A government drug czar was arrested in late 2008 on charges of taking money from traffickers. A dark cloud hangs over Wal-Mart de M?xico, which allegedly paid millions of dollars in bribes to advance its expansion. Distrust in officialdom is as high as ever ? a recent survey by the respected pollster Consulta Mitofsky revealed that just 12.8 percent of the public has confidence in the presidency, and even fewer (6.1 percent) trust the police. Members of the media are under increasing threat and pressure of censorship from the cartels and even local officials, with dozens of journalists killed in recent years and even crime bloggers coming under fire. Officials quietly lament that they have failed to communicate their message to the people. When many officials speak ? "We're winning against the cartels"; "The drug war is not a war" ? many Mexicans are left shaking their heads in bemusement over what that message could possibly be.

If Mexicans often seem unsure as to whether they live in a flourishing democracy or on the brink of state failure, it may be because there aren't institutions or public figures with enough credibility left to define a narrative for the country. With the Catholic Church losing its grip on the masses and increasingly out of touch (one church official declared that Mexico City's liberal mayor was doing more damage to the country with his progressive policies than the drug traffickers), in recent years many Mexicans have looked elsewhere for a charismatic messiah figure or inspirational crusader. But though they have found an initial spark in Isabel Miranda de Wallace (a mother who tracked down her son's kidnappers) and poet Javier Sicilia (who led a march through the country after his son was murdered), these characters have largely failed to live up to expectations, in part because they are intent on remaining ordinary citizens.

It's unlikely that any of the three presidential candidates will capture the country's imagination, either. Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, lost the 2006 election amid allegations of fraud. Since then, he has campaigned nationwide incessantly, traveling to every single one of Mexico's 2,456 counties and decrying the "mafias" that run the country ? a category that includes the presidency and the mainstream media, in his eyes. His most recent rhetoric, however, has been toned down ? he has pledged to withdraw the Mexican Army from the streets, for instance ? earning him the derisive nickname AMLOVE. He has been gaining ground in polls, but still trails Enrique Pe?a Nieto, the PRI's candidate.

Pe?a Nieto has failed to provoke any real heartfelt response from the public besides ridicule. A handsome face with a dubious track record as governor of the famously corrupt Estado de M?xico, a state that surrounds Mexico City, Pe?a Nieto has made blunder after blunder on the campaign trail. His best gaffe: failing to name three books that had influenced his life at the Guadalajara International Book Fair last year. No need for serious concern, however: Pe?a Nieto appears to be backed by the Televisa conglomerate; his wife is a soap opera star; and the average Mexican only reads one book a year. Barring an AMLO surprise finish (which after 2006, cannot be completely discounted), and in spite of allegations that Televisa sold news and entertainment content to promote Pe?a Nieto (he denies this and has claimed the documents are fraudulent), he looks likely to take the presidency, even if some critics fear he'll simply be a puppet for the infamous PRI dinosaurs who have run the party for decades.

Josefina V?zquez Mota, meanwhile, is a woman, which could put her in good stead in a country eager for change. A former education secretary, she has good ideas and good credentials. But she's not seen as a political heavyweight, and her statements about the war on organized crime have failed to dazzle. "My conviction is that to confront organized crime, there can be no room for negotiation," she told me in an interview. And so far, V?zquez Mota has delivered her own gaffes to match those of Pe?a Nieto. On March 30, for instance, she claimed that if elected, she would "strengthen money laundering," a mistake for which she was widely mocked.

While Pe?a Nieto and V?zquez Mota would likely continue down the same road vis-?-vis U.S. cooperation on the drug war (though they have pledged to scale back the use of the military), there is always the possibility that the leftist AMLO would follow the lead of Bolivia's Evo Morales and expel the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from the country. But that's unlikely, given that the United States is doing its utmost right now to help Mexico instill peace and governability. The DEA and other U.S. agencies have expanded their presence in Mexico to support both law enforcement and institution-building, moves that have not been met by the traditional jingoistic cries from the Mexican intellectual elite or the left.

This cooperation is starting to show signs of success. The use of U.S. drones in Mexico to gather intelligence on alleged drug kingpins has not caused great outcry. Intelligence sharing continues to result in the capture or killing of major drug lords. There are now two compounds in Mexico City where U.S. military advisors work with their Mexican counterparts; according to diplomats from both sides of the border, relations at 35,000 feet are smooth sailing, in contrast to fiery border rhetoric in Texas and Arizona. The bungled Fast and Furious operation (in which U.S. agents lost track of guns they had bought and allowed into Mexico in a bid to entrap high-level weapons buyers) and the recent case of mistaken identity in the arrest of a used-car salesman thought to be El Chapo's son have been highly embarrassing for authorities on both sides of the border, but are unlikely to unhinge future cooperation.

Perhaps more crucially, from a political point of view, is the reality that the violence has not deterred investors, foreign or domestic, who realize (unfortunately) that a high body count does not necessarily translate to financial losses. Although the violence appears to be everywhere due to massive media attention, it has largely been confined to hot spots that have historically been insecure. (The notable exceptions are Acapulco, where the tourism industry has suffered immensely from drug-related killings, and Monterrey, where business has been adversely affected.) And for all the criticism of his handling of the drug war, few can dispute that Calder?n and his economic team averted disaster during the economic crisis. With the violence still feeling remote for many, none of the candidates is likely to deviate significantly from Calder?n's tactics.

But Highway 101 is still very much on voters' minds. The site of beheadings and indiscriminate killing in the state of Tamaulipas is now known as the Highway of Death and understandably draws more headlines than the Paseo de la Reforma. But neither of these roads defines the country today. Instead, it's the third road ? the one leading through the hills of Sinaloa to the major smuggling plaza of Ciudad Ju?rez, a road that will facilitate both international trade and drug trafficking ? that may well be the road to Mexico's future.

Next stop for Arizona immigration law: Back to the courts?

Damian Dovarganes / AP

Members of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles hold a rally in response to the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on Arizona's immigration law, outside the Los Angeles Federal Court building on Monday.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

The ?show me your papers? provision of Arizona?s immigration law that was left standing by the U.S. Supreme Court is likely to wind up in a familiar place ? back in the courtroom.

The nation?s top justices on Monday struck down three sections of SB 1070 but unanimously upheld the most-discussed provision: Section 2(B) requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop, detain or arrest for other legitimate reasons ?if there?s reasonable suspicion? the person is in the country illegally.

But exactly how local police will go about enforcing that provision is raising more questions than answers. Enforcement had been put on hold pending the Supreme Court decision; lower courts must lift the injunction before it can take effect.

Even the?Supreme Court justices hinted that they expect the?provision to be legally challenged again.

?There is a basic uncertainty about what the law means and how it will be enforced. At this stage, without the benefit of a definitive interpretation from the state courts, it would be inappropriate to assume 2(B) will be construed in a way that creates a conflict with federal law,? the high court said.

The Supreme Court declared three parts of Arizona's immigration law unconstitutional, but unanimously upheld the most controversial part. Now the high court is expected to make a ruling on "Obamacare" on Thursday. NBC's Pete Williams reports and NBC's Chuck Todd and Professor Noah Feldman weigh in.

?This opinion does not foreclose other preemption and constitutional challenges to the law as interpreted and applied after it goes into effect.?

The American Civil Liberties Union says it is exploring legal challenges to keep ?show me your papers? from ever taking effect.

?The Supreme Court vacated the injunction against it but took pains to point out the potential constitutional problems that are inherent in Section 2(B) and drew a firm line in the sand that the state cannot cross,? said Cecillia Wang, director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project. ?We are going to be in court bringing new claims and evidence to stop 2(B) again.?

Among the possible claims are that the provision violates the Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches and seizures and that it invites racial profiling, ACLU officials say.

Joe Rubio, lead organizer for the Arizona Interfaith Network, a coalition of religious groups that opposed SB 1070, said the provision ?leaves a nebulous area? if it goes into effect.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to NBC News Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County, Ariz., shown here, about the ripple effect of the Supreme Court's ruling.

?It?s going to be important that the state monitors very closely how police deal with immigrants during regular stops and make sure racial profiling does not occur,? Rubio said.

?I think we?re going to have a few months here where people are suspending judgment to see how it?s going to be implemented.?

Jim Gilchrist, founder and president of the Minuteman Project, an anti-illegal immigration group that recruits volunteers to patrol the U.S. border with Mexico, said the Supreme Court decision ?left vague? the fate of enforcement of immigration laws by local police.

?Police will be able to ask (about immigration status); however, that?s all they can do,? he said.

?Nobody?s really getting serious about this. Everybody keeps kicking the ball around the court.?

The interpretation of Section 2(B)?also could put law officers in a precarious bind. There are no written instructions on how long local police must wait for federal immigration officials to respond, for example, when they encounter someone they suspect is illegal.? And immigration checks could open police up to accusations of racial profiling.

"Talk about 'no win' - if they find the person is not in authorized status, what do they do? Hold them for ICE which doesn't want them? Charge them with some state crime?" said Margaret Stock, an immigration attorney who has?has testified before Congress on immigration, homeland security and military issues.

"If they make a mistake, they get sued. If they make too many mistakes, the rest of the statute gets enjoined as unconstitutional as enforced."

"We're going to get sued if we do. We're going to get sued if we don't. That's a terrible position to put law enforcement officers in," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, whose territory covers much of southern Arizona, told The Associated Press.

Tucson police Chief Roberto Villasenor told the AP he estimates the statute will result in 50,000 additional calls a year to federal immigration authorities in his city alone.

Romney pledges immigration reform, wants more state 'latitude'

Suspects for minor crimes like shoplifting or vandalism, who would normally be released with a citation, must be booked into custody if immigration authorities "don't answer the phone, they never call us back after we talk to them or whatever," Villasenor said.

The Department of Homeland Security acknowledges that the provision raises the possibility that its offices might be flooded by calls for verification checks.

?The Court?s decision not to strike down Section 2?at this time will make DHS? work more challenging,? DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement.

Jon Feere, of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington-based think tank that advocates for limited legal immigration, suggested that enforcement will ultimately lead to tougher immigration laws once Congress or the courts are forced to act definitively.

?There will now be an extensive record every time Arizona contacts ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) about an illegal alien detained by local law enforcement. When the White House inevitably refuses to take an illegal alien into custody, forcing Arizona to release the alien back out onto the streets, it will become a national story if the alien goes on to commit a serious crime. Lax federal enforcement of immigration laws will be to blame,? he wrote in a blog post.

Five other states have passed laws similar to Arizona?s --?Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah.

The ACLU says it has raised nearly $8.8 million in a special fund to challenge ?show me your papers? laws in Arizona and those other states. And it?s ready to go to court again.

?If state governments enact new immigration bills, we say bring it on, we will see them in court,? ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said Monday.

The Justice Department has set up a federal hotline for the public to report potential civil rights concerns regarding the Arizona law. The phone number is 1-855-353-1010. The email is: SB1070(at)usdoj.gov.

Sun exposure and cutaneous HPV infection found synergistic in skin cancers

Monday, June 25, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg have found that having antibodies for cutaneous types of human papillomavirus (HPV), coupled with sun exposure (ultraviolet radiation) or poor tanning ability, can act "synergistically" in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

A number of studies into the relationship between cutaneous HPV and sun exposure have been conducted previously but with mixed results, the researchers said.

This study, the first to investigate interaction effects between genus-specific cutaneous HPV positivity and multiple measures of sunlight exposure as related to BCC and SCC in a U.S. population, was published in a recent issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"UV radiation exposure is the most important risk factor for the development of non-melanoma skins cancer," said study lead author Dana E. Rollison, Ph.D., Moffitt associate member, vice president and chief health information officer. "Cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are increasing despite the increased use of sunscreen products. Thus, so that new interventions can be developed, there is a need to identify co-factors that may interact with UV radiation exposure in increasing the skin cancer risk."

According to the authors, the risk factors for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are male sex; age; light skin, eyes and hair; and UV radiation exposure.

UV radiation exposure and light skin pigmentation are the most recognized risk factors. People with low melanin production tend to have difficulty tanning when exposed to UV radiation.

Skin pigmentation, created by chemical melanin production in the skin, is the "main photoprotective mechanism in the skin," noted the researchers.

The researchers hypothesized that persistent HPV infection may promote tumor progression by interfering with an individual's response to UV radiation-induced DNA damage and that HPV plays a synergistic role in the development of BCC and SCC. Accordingly, their goal was to investigate the potential "modifying effects of cutaneous HPV seroreactivity on the associations between sunlight exposure, host susceptibility to UV radiation exposure, and both BCC and SCC."

The study recruited 204 patient volunteers with BCC, 156 with SCC, and 297 controls with no reported cancer types. The three groups were surveyed on demographics, personal constitutional characteristics, lifestyle factors and measurements of sunlight exposure. Each volunteer provided a blood sample for cutaneous HPV antibody measurement.

"Sun-related factors were associated with BCC and SCC," Rollison said. "Cutaneous sensitivity to sunlight exposure - specifically experiencing a blistering sunburn - and poor tanning ability were associated with a higher prevalence of antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genus beta. The associations between poor tanning ability and SCC were significantly greater among those positive for antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genera alpha and beta."

Additional studies are needed, including those measuring infection with cutaneous HPV types in multiple genera, concluded the researchers.

"Identifying how HPV infections might influence sunlight-associated risks of NMSC may lead to improved identification of high-risk individuals and also aid in the development of new prevention strategies," Rollison said.

4 leadership messages your talent needs to hear

Worried about a leadership shortage? Gazing at a thin management pipeline? Wondering how to get the most out of the talent you have?

It?s time to expand and amplify your organization?s leadership by looking beyond your proven superstars and management-track talent.

Young professionals and experienced individual contributors need to be part of the leadership equation, too. These overlooked leaders are the people who are working on project teams, influencing others and taking on ever-larger and more complex assignments.

Consider the role of highly experienced professionals. As individual contributors, they play critical roles as engineers, designers, medical professionals, marketing or logistics experts, and so on. They are expected to take on project-management roles and be key players on cross-functional teams. As their role expands and they increasingly work with others, subject-matter expertise is no longer a guarantee of their success or effectiveness.

Meanwhile, early-career professionals are looking for ways to engage, interact and gain skills. As they navigate their work and your organization, they have many opportunities to lead, even before they step into formal management roles.

Both groups are in the right place to leverage leadership skills, but they need the nod from you. So, here are four messages that you ? and your fellow leaders ? can send to the skilled experts, up-and-coming professionals and, in fact, the entire organization.

1. Think ?process,? not ?position?
Leadership is a process, not a title. It?s about leading with others in ways that establish direction, create alignment and build commitment. Rather than looking for someone else to be a leader, individual contributors need to ask themselves: ?What am I bringing to the leadership process?? ?How can I better facilitate the process of effective leadership in my group or in my project team??

2. Understand your leadership brand
Your leadership brand is created by the ways you behave, react and interact. It affects your network, and it is linked to your effectiveness.

Like it or not, you already have a leadership brand. You have a reputation based on how you get things done and how you interact with others. To leverage your leadership brand or to steer it in a different direction, you need to get a clear picture of how others perceive you today.

Start paying attention to how you work ? not just what you know or what you accomplish. How do you learn? How do you share information, make decisions and influence others? How do you build and nurture both day-to-day and strategic relationships? Just by paying attention to these questions, you?ll gain some insight. You?ll also want to check in with peers, a mentor and your boss ? or seek out opportunities for formal feedback or a leadership development program ? to gain a better picture of your leadership brand.

3. Take control
You are in charge of your leadership brand, so invest in your learning and development as a leader. Your boss or your organization may not always tell you exactly what is needed or hand you the tools and experiences that will boost your effectiveness.

Take time to think about your current job and future career. Begin by focusing on your No. 1 workplace challenge. How does your leadership brand support your work today? What would happen if you could be more effective? How could improving your own leadership ability help get you there? What do you need to learn or change to improve your leadership skills and hone your leadership brand?

4. You are seen, heard and valued
The company needs you to be as effective as you can be. Your co-workers do, too. Even though you don?t have ?manager? in your job title ? or don?t have direct reports ? or are new to your career, your leadership abilities are critical both to your own success as well as your company?s.

When you send these messages ? clearly and consistently ? the people in your organization will see that they can contribute to something bigger than themselves: the process of leadership.

Musical robot companion enhances listener experience

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Wedding DJs everywhere should be worried about job security now that a new robot is on the scene.

Shimi, a musical companion developed by Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology, recommends songs, dances to the beat and keeps the music pumping based on listener feedback. The smartphone-enabled, one-foot-tall robot is billed as an interactive "musical buddy."

"Shimi is designed to change the way that people enjoy and think about their music," said Professor Gil Weinberg, director of Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology and the robot's creator. He will unveil the robot at the June 27th Google I/O conference in San Francisco. A band of three Shimi robots will strut its stuff for guests, dancing in sync to music created in the lab and composed according to its movements.

Shimi is essentially a docking station with a "brain" powered by an Android phone. Once docked, the robot gains the sensing and musical generation capabilities of the user's mobile device. In other words, if there's an "app for that," Shimi is ready.

For instance, by using the phone's camera and face-detecting software, the bot can follow a listener around the room and position its "ears," or speakers, for optimal sound. Another recognition feature is based on rhythm and tempo. If the user taps or claps a beat, Shimi analyzes it, scans the phone's musical library and immediately plays the song that best matches the suggestion. Once the music starts, Shimi dances to the rhythm.

"Many people think that robots are limited by their programming instructions," said Music Technology Ph.D. candidate Mason Bretan. "Shimi shows us that robots can be creative and interactive."

Future apps in the works will allow the user to shake their head in disagreement or wave a hand in the air to alert Shimi to skip to the next song or increase/decrease the volume. The robot will also have the capability to recommend new music based on the user's song choices and provide feedback on the music play list.

Weinberg hopes other developers will be inspired to create more apps to expand Shimi's creative and interactive capabilities, allowing the machine to leave the lab and head into the real world.

"I believe that our center is ahead of a revolution that will see more robots in homes, bypassing some of the fears some people have about machines doing everyday functions in their lives," Weinberg said.

Weinberg is in the process of commercializing Shimi through an exclusive licensing agreement with Georgia Tech. A new start-up company, Tovbot, has been formed and Weinberg hopes to make the robot available to consumers by the 2013 holiday season. Shimi was developed in collaboration with the Media Innovation Lab at IDC Herzliya and led by Professor Guy Hoffmann. Entrepreneur Ian Campbell and robot designer Roberto Aimi were also part of the Shimi team.

This is the third robotic musician created by the Center for Music Technology. Haile is a percussionist that can listen to live players, analyze their music in real-time and improvise with music of its own. Shimon is an interactive marimba player.

"If robots are going to arrive in homes, we think that they will be these kind of machines -- small, entertaining and fun," Weinberg said. "They will enhance your life and pave the way for more sophisticated service robots in our lives."

Prostate Cancer Roundtable and AUA support legislation related to ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

Ten members if the Prostate Cancer Roundtable have, this morning, issued a media release supporting proposed legislation in Congress designed to revise the activities and functions of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The American Urological Association also supports the proposed bill.

The proposed legislation is known as the USPSTF Transparency and Accountability Act of 2012 (H.R. 5998). The media release issued by the 10 signatory organizations among the members of the Prostate Cancer Roundtable is available on the Roundtable?s web site. At the time of posting this message, the full text of this bill is not available on the ?Thomas? web site.

The two members of the Roundtable that have not signed on as supporters of this peice of legislation are Prostate Cancer International (the parent organization of this web site) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Prostate Cancer International (PCI) is of the opinion that the proposed legislation is simply not constructive, will go nowhere, and is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the function and role of the USPSTF. PCI respects the fact that others have different opinions, and PCI further understands that there were serious flaws in the way that the USPSTF packaged its recent recommendation about prostate cancer screening. However, we do not believe that legislation of this type is any way to resolve what is basically an educational issue.

Wieters' 2-run HR in 8th lifts Orioles

By DAVID GINSBURG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:40 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to interrupt Baltimore's agonizing offensive struggle, and the Orioles rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 Sunday in a duel between neighboring rivals.

Baltimore appeared headed for its third shutout loss in six games before Adam Jones led off the eighth with a single off Sean Burnett (0-1) and Wieters drove an 0-1 pitch over the center-field wall.

Prior to the home run, the Orioles had wasted several scoring opportunities and stranded eight runners over seven innings. Baltimore scored only five runs in the series and went 1 for 16 with runners in scoring position, yet still managed to win two of three.

The Orioles finished 11-7 in interleague play and won five of six series.

Pedro Strop (4-2) got the final out in the eighth for Baltimore and Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his 22nd save. The game ended when Johnson struck out Danny Espinosa and Wieters threw out Ian Desmond attempting to steal second.

Ryan Zimmerman had the lone RBI for the Nationals, who scored five runs in the series. Washington was 34-2 when leading after seven innings.

Making his first start for the Nationals since May 25, Ross Detwiler allowed four hits and walked two in five scoreless innings. In his previous start against Baltimore on May 19, the left-hander gave up six runs. But that was at a point in the season when the Orioles scored 32 runs over a six-game span.

Jake Arrieta gave up one run and five hits in six innings, and it still took an unlikely comeback by the Orioles for him to avoid becoming the first 10-game loser in the big leagues this season.

Zimmerman snapped a 5-for-49 slump and gave Washington a 1-0 third-inning lead with a two-out single that scored Jhonatan Solano.

Detwiler retired the first seven batters he faced and was cruising until the fourth, when Baltimore loaded the bases with two outs. Ronny Paulino hit a harmless fly ball to end the threat.

In the Orioles fifth, two singles and a groundout put runners on second and third with two outs for Jones, who hit a fly ball to deep left.

Bryce Harper led off the Washington sixth by turning a bouncer up the middle into a dash-for-second double, but Arrieta worked out of trouble by getting Desmond to hit a two-out popup.

Baltimore's frustration continued in the seventh, when J.J. Hardy grounded out with runners on second and third and two outs.

NOTES: After taking Monday off, the Orioles open a two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. LHP Dana Eveland likely will begin paternity leave on that day, and it's possible that RHP Matt Lindstrom (finger) will be activated from the disabled list to fill out the Baltimore roster. ... On Monday night in Colorado, Washington RHP Stephen Strasburg vies to become the first player in Nationals history to win seven consecutive starts. ... Nationals closer Drew Storen, who had elbow surgery in April, said he expects to throw batting practice Monday and hopes to make his season debut next weekend in Atlanta. "Just a matter of getting that last 10 percent," the right-hander said. ... Held out of the starting lineup in part because of an 0-for-28 slump, Baltimore's Chris Davis flied out as a pinch hitter. ... The Orioles have gone 17 straight games without a stolen base, their longest such streak since a 20-game run in June 1962.

**Great Laptop For The Price $320** >>Special Buy I just bought this laptop yesterday from my local Wal-Mart store for myself. I own another Toshiba laptop that I purchased 2 years ago which now I'm giving to my children. These computers are great, haven't had any problems since I've had them. You can't beat paying a great price for a top of the line name band in electronics! 03/07/2012

Great buy! Just bought this yesterday at my local store for $328. Great speed. Lots of fun apps on it and there is an app store for Toshiba. There is also a book site that you can download books from and read them on your laptop. Easy setup good speed. I hemmed and hawed about 3gigs instead of 4 gigs, but I really don't save work info on my computer I just game and play on social internet sites. I would highly recommend this laptop. 03/17/2012

My 1st Toshiba I picked this out, because the local Wal*Mart did not have a large amount of laptops in stock in my price range. So I get this home. I like the laptop so far. I like the number pad, extra. It seems to have more then enough ram. Not to concerned about the hard drive as I have an external hard drive. The processor is fast enough for what I need. The only real problem is the speakers just don't seem to be loud enough, will be using either ear phones or a pair of external speakers.I would recommend this to my friends, wal*mart needs to carry more.... 03/18/2012

a very good computer. does everything i need to do.going to buy hubby one now.cant keep him off mine.love it.you wont go wrong buying this computer. love the price. 03/17/2012
