Ball State announced the return of former coach Rich Maloney as head baseball coach in a press conference on Friday.

Maloney previously coached the baseball team for seven years from 1996-2002 and led Ball State through some of its most successful years when he posted a record of 256-144-1.

The reunion gave Maloney the opportunity to greet familiar faces in the department and Ball State that have remained since Maloney?s tenure at the school before.

Athletic Director Bill Scholl introduced Maloney and said he was excited for the future of Ball State baseball and called Maloney the ?best coach in America.?

Maloney spent the last 10 years coaching Michigan, leading the team to a record of 341-224 and the 2007 NCAA Regional title.

Scholl said the interest in the position was incredible but Maloney was on the list of candidates Scholl was interested in from the outset.

?It?s a special moment for me and my family to come back to Muncie,? Maloney said during the press conference. ?This was a great place for us the first go around and I?m sure it will be a great place this go around.?

Maloney said Scholl was committed to getting him here to lead the program.
