What Quadruples the Risk of Death in a Teenage Car Accident ...

Car accidents remain the number one cause of death for teenagers. This is something to focus on especially during "Teen Driver Safety Week" (October 14-20).

Car accident statistics show that teenage drivers are involved in more automobile crashes per mile than drivers of any other age group. Also, drivers aged 16 and 17 are involved in about seven times as many crashes per mile driven compared to drivers in their forties, fifties, or sixties.

How can we reduce the risk of car accidents involving teenagers? One way is to watch who is driving with teenager drivers. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, data analysis on fatal crashes that occurred nationwide from 2005 and 2010 shows that over 9,500 drivers age 16 and 17 were involved in fatal automobile crashes, and that nearly 4,000 of these car crashes included at least one teen passenger. This study also shows how risk of death in a traffic crash for 16 and 17-year-old drivers increases by 44 percent when carrying one passenger younger than 21. This risk of death in a car accident doubles with two passengers under the age of 21 and quadruples with three or more younger passengers, compared to driving alone.

The study showed that with younger passengers in the car, the prevalence of speeding increased from 30 percent to 48 percent with three or more teen passengers.

?Mixing young drivers with teen passengers can have dangerous consequences,? said AAA Utah spokesperson Rolayne Fairclough. ?AAA urges parents to set and consistently enforce family rules that limit newly licensed teens from driving with young passengers.?

Even if you do not have teenage drivers in your house, this is important to you. Teenage drivers overrepresented in crashes that result in the death of other people, such as passengers, pedestrians, or occupants of other vehicles--no matter how old the pedestrians and occupants of other cars are.

Drive safely and watch out for those who don't. Pay extra attention to teenage drivers this week. Doing so could save their life and yours.
