The science behind more power for low tension badminton strings is down to the point of impact between the shuttlecock and your badminton strings. Once the shuttlecock makes contact with the badminton strings, the strings move in and then push back out. This creates a catapult like effect which gives you more power. With a higher tension, when the shuttlecock makes contact with the badminton strings, it does not sink into the strings as much, which gives you more control over accuracy.
Once you know the type of tension you're going for, it's also prudent to choose the correct gauge for your badminton strings. Gauges are categorised by numbers ranging from 20 to 22, and some will have 'micro' as a suffix. These numbers dictate the diameter of the string in millimetres. A thicker diameter of badminton string will take much longer to become damaged and need to be replaced. It's also worth noting that thicker badminton strings will hold their tension for a longer period of time than thin badminton strings. Thinner badminton strings benefit from an increased amount of power and control than thicker strings. The smaller surface area lowers the air resistance and allows for a much smoother and quicker swing. Although the different gauges of badminton strings offer different features, the difference in power and control is not very noticeable.
It's often said that strings are the most important part of your set-up, and following this advice, choose wisely. Deciding between tensions and gauges will be important when considering your style of play. It's a good idea to try a different range of tensions to find what kind of tension suits your playing style and picking out the correct gauge will also provide a small increase to your skill.
